Nice in the race to be European Capital of Culture 2028

“We have made culture a priority of the mandate”. Already a candidate in 2013, Nice is back in the race to be European Capital of Culture in 2028, Mayor LR Christian Estrosi announced Thursday in an interview published in a local edition of the Point. Bourges, Rouen, Clermont-Ferrand and Saint-Denis are already in the running.

To support his candidacy, the elected representative mentions an investment plan of more than 100 million euros over five years: “It includes a plan for the renovation of our museums, the development of three new performance halls in heritage elements. remarkable, the transformation of 109 [d’anciens abattoirs à l’Est de la ville] in third place, the renovation of the Opera, the relaunch of the studios of the Victorine, but also the establishment of an education in the various arts in the 160 schools of the city ”.

From mass tourism to cultural tourism

Asked about the need to build a new Exhibition and Congress Center, he assures us that the Covid-19 crisis has not made the project obsolete. “The tourism of the world before is mass tourism from which we have already moved away before the Covid. Tourism focused on culture, the environment and major international events, is tourism after, ”he explains.

Christian Estrosi has planned the controversial demolition in 2022 of the Acropolis Palace and the National Theater in Nice to create a wooded park in the city center.
