Newcastle United: departure at what price? – Sports

The English first division soccer club Newcastle United has changed hands and is now owned by a consortium from Saudi Arabia. According to British media reports, the investors are paying around 350 million euros to the previous owner, Mike Ashley. The takeover is controversial – mainly because of the human rights situation in Saudi Arabia. Amnesty International continues to express criticism that the country wants to polish its image with this step too. The fans of the penultimate, however, broke out a great deal of euphoria, which was also observed in a sometimes questionable way at the weekend in the first game since the change of ownership.

Does the political and social situation in Saudi Arabia play no role at all for the supporters and the Premier League? Who is behind the consortium? What strategy are the new owners pursuing? And how will the enormous financial strength of the fund of probably 370 billion euros influence and change the balance of power in the Premier League? Moderator Anna Dreher talks about this with football expert Sven Haist in this episode of “And now for sport”.
