Chris Hipkins wore a suit and tie when Labor MPs elected him party leader and prime minister-elect in Wellington on Sunday. That was noticeable because the day before when he was presented as the only candidate to succeed Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, who surprisingly resigned, he had said that he “may not have the best sense of fashion in Parliament”. That in turn was a reference to a television interview on Friday morning. He had – by no means reluctantly – allowed himself to be caught in his morning sports clothes. Baseball cap, hoodie, wrap-around sunglasses. This was eagerly commented on on social media.
