A man attacked and injured several people in Auckland. New Zealand’s Prime Minister Ardern spoke of a “terrorist attack” – “inspired” by the so-called Islamic State. The man was shot dead by the police.

A man attacked several people in a supermarket in a suburb of Auckland, New Zealand. The police said he was shot dead by security forces. At least six people were injured in New Lynn, southwest of the city center, some seriously, reported the broadcaster Radio New Zealand, citing the aid organization St. John.

Ardern speaks of terror

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern described the incident as a “terrorist attack”. According to her, the perpetrator was “inspired” by the so-called Islamic State. He had been known to the security authorities since 2016 and was under surveillance. “What happened today was despicable, it was hateful, it was wrong,” said Ardern. There is no belief behind this, but “an ideology that is not supported by anyone here”.

Bought a murder weapon in the supermarket

According to the information, the man is said to have bought a knife in the supermarket before attacking those present. The police, who were in action with a large contingent and a helicopter, cordoned off a large area around the LynnMall shopping center.

The supermarket chain Countdown, of which LynnMall belongs, said management was “devastated” by the incident. Only in May there was a knife attack with five injured in another supermarket of the chain.
