There were a good two dozen attacks on or acts of resistance against police officers across Bavaria on New Year’s Eve. A total of 29 offenses were recorded across Bavaria for resistance to or physical attacks on law enforcement officials, said Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) on Tuesday after a cabinet meeting in Munich. All of this is “no comparison” to the “serious crimes” in Berlin. Such riots would be successfully prevented in Bavaria.
Herrmann again rejected calls for a ban on firecrackers as a consequence of New Year’s Eve in Berlin as ineffective. Such a ban does not solve the actual problem, namely the increasing brutalization of rioters and the dwindling respect for police officers, fire brigades or other emergency services.
And the riots in Berlin are no reason to tighten gun laws. With New Year’s Eve, stricter rules could “certainly not” be justified, said Herrmann. The “Southgerman newspaper” had reported on a draft law from the Federal Ministry of the Interior under Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD), which, among other things, provides for a ban on particularly dangerous semi-automatic weapons for private individuals. In future, alarm pistols should therefore only be available on presentation of a gun license. Faeser, however, had already Riots on New Year’s Eve for a tightening of gun laws.
On New Year’s Eve, police officers and firefighters were attacked in several German cities, including with firecrackers and rockets. The attacks in Berlin were particularly violent. According to the Berlin police, 355 criminal and administrative offense proceedings were initiated there. 145 people had been arrested for the time being, all suspects were released after the police measures had been completed, it said.
