The police in Munich went out on hundreds of missions on New Year’s Eve. According to an initial assessment in the morning, the police were called upon to carry out more than 490 operations. According to the information, there were more than 25 fires, 70 operations due to pyrotechnics as well as 20 disturbances of the peace and 15 bodily harm crimes.
Most people had gathered on Marienplatz in front of the town hall on New Year’s Eve. The police counted up to 10,000 people there at times welcoming the New Year. Since there was a complete ban on fireworks in this area from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. due to a general order from the state capital, the police seized fireworks in numerous cases. The ban applies until midnight on Monday. Around 4,000 people also celebrated at the Friedensengel, Europaplatz and the adjacent parks. The area was closed to traffic from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m.
Several missions from the night are currently being processed. The loud bangs and fireworks on New Year’s Eve are always a particular challenge for animals. The Munich headquarters received around ten calls from pet owners on New Year’s Eve because dogs had been startled by fireworks and had run away. In four cases, pets were reported to the police by informants. Some of the animals have already been reunited with their owners.
