New rule: rugby players are allowed to wear leggings or tights – panorama

What has not recently been learned about absurd dress codes for athletes. There were Norway’s beach handball players who were punished for competing in shorts instead of in bikini panties. The German gymnasts with long suits indicate equality. Or the Welsh athlete Olivia Breen, who was reprimanded because her shorts were too short and so are “inappropriate”.

So how nice that it is now about dress codes for men, more precisely: for rugby players. The World Rugby Association has adjusted its rules and now allows men to do what rugby women have long been allowed to do: wear leggings or tights. Mainly to prevent abrasions on the knees.

The fact is that rugby players are generally tough guys and the general public generally has a hard time imagining tough guys in tights, at least after Robin Hood. One can see, among other things, how the topic of men and leggings is discussed online (Google keyword “meggings”).

For many, the central problem with men’s leggings is that they draw off mercilessly. That demonstrated for example the actor Shia LaBeouf vivid, who tried to establish the meggings look back in 2017. Ballet dancers would also have a lot to say about the matter, for example which underpants you wear underneath. But before you feel sorry for the rugby players: are compulsory according to “World Rugby Law” (in addition to underpants underneath) also shorts over the leggings. The tough rugby players end up looking like ordinary suburban joggers.
