New processors for old motherboards | c’t uplink 48.0c

In the podcast c’t uplink, c’t editor Christian Hirsch shows how to swap the main processor of your PC for a faster one. In this way, the old PC becomes fit for new tasks, and perhaps it will also succeed in an update to Windows 11 that Microsoft has previously refused.

The weekly c’t podcast c’t uplink is available …

We clarify how much faster the new CPU should be so that the change is worthwhile. Then you start researching which CPUs your own motherboard supports. Or before that: Notebooks and mini PCs can generally not be converted, and the situation is also worse for complete PCs. Do-it-yourself PCs are more suitable, for example the ones from our annual c’t recommendation “The optimal PC”.

Before you unscrew the machine, the most important steps are to update the BIOS and turn off hard drive encryption if necessary – or to think about anything that might store information in the TPM chip, since some processors have it built into it. The power supply, on the other hand, should be sufficiently dimensioned in most cases.

The podcast gives tips on all of this, and then also on the specific exchange: What should be considered with fans, thermal paste and the various AMD and Intel socket types? After the conversion, there may still be driver updates – and then don’t forget to reactivate the hard disk encryption.

This podcast episode can be viewed individually on YouTube. On the other platforms, it appears together with the topic “Multiple sockets with USB-C charging socket”, which has been appearing individually on YouTube since Friday. In it, c’t editor Rudi Opitz reports on the surprising limitations that these sockets, which are actually practical and space-saving, suffer from.

On Thursday, the podcast episode “Save money with prepaid cards for your smartphone” with c’t editor Urs Mansmann also appeared exclusively on YouTube.
