Citroën e C4x

© press-inform – the press office

With the e C4x, Citroen is launching an interesting mid-range crossover. Unfortunately, the customer has no choice when it comes to the drive, because there is only the flimsy standard solution from Stellantis and a narrow 136 hp electric drive has to do. Some international markets also get the C4x with petrol or diesel engines.

After the new C5, Citroen is launching the C4x, a chic mid-range crossover that is reminiscent of the recently unveiled Peugeot 408 and can hardly deny its relationship to the larger C5. The new C4x is only available with an electric drive on most markets, but it only fits very moderately with the elegant, sporty crossover. Because a 100 kW / 136 hp / 260 Nm electric motor on the front axle is not enough of a good thing in this increasingly competitive volume segment. Citroen offers its new beacon of hope only with the electric motor that has to drive the electric models in the entire Stellantis Group. But what may fit in an Opel Corsa E or a Peugeot E 208 is a bit small a few classes above it; because there is not even an additional drive on the rear axle for a surcharge, which would guarantee more traction, performance, image and a higher sales price. In some markets in southern Europe, Asia and South America, the Citroen C4x is also available with well-known petrol and diesel engines from the group shelf and the plug is left out here. These are then also significantly faster than the limited 150 km/h top speed of the electric version, which has a 50 kWh battery in the underbody.

The design, which is worth seeing, is also the strong side of the 4.60 meter long Citroen e C4x, because a range of 360 kilometers and a maximum charging capacity of a mere 100 kilowatts is not enough if you want to go on a long journey or the next winter the door knocks to rob you of the kilometers. It remains to be seen whether this will be followed up in the near future, because the international competition in this league has long been offering a range of more than 500 kilometers, optionally all-wheel drives or engine outputs of well over 300 hp. Vincent Cobée, CEO of Citroen: “Many customers have told us that they want an affordable, responsible and stylish alternative to the many hatchback and SUV offerings in the compact class and this is our best interpretation of that need.”

Inside, thanks to the variable CMP platform, there is room for up to five people, a 510 liter cargo space that can be enlarged by folding down the separately folding rear seats. Unfortunately, the battery pack leaves a painful step in the cargo area that prevents a flat surface. There is space under the boot floor for transporting additional items and accommodating the charging cables. The dashboard is already known from the big brother Citroen C5. Here the C4x offers animated instruments, some direct dial buttons and a flat ten-inch screen for navigation, sound system and most vehicle functions. The crossover offers warming seat heating at the front and rear, while the front chairs are made particularly comfortable with a massage option. 16 open and closed compartments with a volume of almost 40 liters further increase interior comfort, while various assistance systems support the driver in everyday life. The price for the Citroen e C4x has not yet been determined; Market launch is early next year.
