Renaissance portraits in Amsterdam, portraits of Frans Hals in London and Dürer in Aachen, portraits of Rembrandt in Frankfurt and Rubens in Stuttgart: so much portrait painting has seldom been seen. The German art historian Andreas Beyer teaches at the University of Basel and has repeatedly published on this topic – from his large book on “The Portrait in Painting” to a recently published article on contemporary portraits by the American painter Elizabeth Peyton.
