Islam allows imitation of the Kaaba. Theoretically. The German artist Gregor Schneider, who devised a controversial, ultimately banned replica of the Mecca sacred building as an interreligious space for thought for the Venice Biennale, said angrily: “In every kebab shop there is a model” – of the Kaaba. Kaaba means: Cube. What is meant is a cuboid building, like millions of them, especially in warm and dry regions around the world.
