New federal government: The Greens also vote for the traffic light coalition – politics

The way is clear for the first traffic light coalition at federal level: After the SPD and FDP, the Greens have now also approved the coalition agreement. In a strike vote, around 86 percent of party members voted for the new government cooperation, as the Greens announced. This means that the 177-page contract can be signed on Tuesday, and Olaf Scholz (SPD) will be elected Chancellor on Wednesday.

According to the Federal Managing Director of the Greens, Michael Kellner, 71,214 members took part in the vote, which corresponds to a participation of around 57 percent. Of them, 61,174 voted for the traffic light coalition. The federal chairwoman Annalena Baerbock said: “We are now starting with a strong tailwind from the ballot in a new federal government.” Their “most important task” is now to contain the corona pandemic.

An approval of 86 percent is “quite a mega-result” for the Greens, said Claudia Roth, once federal chairwoman, vice-president of the Bundestag for eight years and in future minister of state in the Chancellery responsible for culture. This result also reflects the hopes of the members: “They expect a lot from us.”

The Greens will head five ministries in the new federal government: Baerbock will be Foreign Minister, the Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection will be taken over by Robert Habeck, who will also be Vice Chancellor. The family department will be headed by Anne Spiegel, the environment ministry by Steffi Lemke and the ministry of agriculture by Cem Özdemir. The members also voted on this personnel package. When asked whether it was not enough that Özdemir was the only one in the future cabinet to have a so-called migration background, Habeck replied that he could only speak for the Greens. “We have shown the diverse Germany in an exemplary manner.”

At the weekend, the SPD and FDP approved the traffic light coalition – each at a federal party conference. The FDP delegates voted with 92.2 percent, the SPD delegates with a majority of 98.8 percent. Only the Greens let all of their 125,000 members vote on the coalition agreement and the Green Ministerial.

With their approval, nothing stands in the way of the new alliance. At the level of the federal states, the SPD, Greens and FDP have already worked together several times; there is currently such a coalition in Rhineland-Palatinate.
