New Federal Cabinet: Support for Anton Hofreiter – District of Munich

If it were up to the Greens in the Munich district, Anton Hofreiter would have become Minister of Transport or at least Minister of Agriculture in the new Ampel government. The disappointment among the political friends of the native Sauerlacher and current Unterhachinger over the personnel decision in Berlin is great the day after.

Christoph Nadler, leader of the Greens in the district council: For the Greens in the district and probably also for Toni, it is bitter first of all that he did not become Minister of Transport, although he was actually set and had proven his skills as Chairman of the Transport Committee. Instead, Volker Wissing of the FDP becomes Transport Minister, who has no idea about transport. Toni would also have been the right Minister of Agriculture for the peasant factions he would have dealt with. Here, however, it was less the professionalism that played the most important role, it was more about proportional representation, and there was also a lot of fundi-real thinking. When deciding between Toni Hofreiter and Cem Özdemir, it was taken into account that the Baden-Württemberg state association is the largest and that Özdemir has won his constituency with 40 percent.

Susanna Tausendfreund, Mayor of Pullach and former member of the state parliament for the Greens: Toni will still make his way, not for him personally, but for his convictions. The decision against him is a shame, he would have made a good minister. Everything to do with nature conservation and agriculture, Toni is just as good at it as he would have been as Minister of Transport, a task that would have been a little closer for him. Here he would have had more room for maneuver and urgently set new accents. I know him and his family very well, I also married him and his wife Judith at the Pullach registry office. Toni is very direct, above all he is authentic, he stands behind what he says.

Barbara Bogner, Mayor of Hofreiter’s home community Sauerlach: Toni Hofreiter was a councilor with us before he went to Berlin. I always thought to myself: If he becomes something in Berlin, it will be Minister of Transport. Things turned out differently, but even as Minister for Agriculture and Food he could have made a difference, for example to support the community of Sauerlach in making progress with their wind power project and also with the area photovoltaics that we are planning on a gravel pit. Robert Habeck (Federal Chairman of the Greens, editor’s note) announced on Wednesday that he would facilitate and accelerate planning and permits for wind power and photovoltaics.

Wolfgang Büsch, spokesman and councilor of the Sauerlach Greens: The decision against Toni Hofreiter is very regrettable for me and the local association. Because of his professional qualifications, he would have been a very good transport minister, and he could also have demonstrated the necessary professional competence for the Ministry of Agriculture. But proportional representation also played a role. I wish him that he will continue to be in a position in which he can support the new government. We’ll see if he will remain the parliamentary group spokesman. Knives are quickly sharpened in politics.

Markus Büchler, Spokesman for Mobility of the Greens in the Bavarian State Parliament: I’m a little self-conscious because I know Toni very well. I would have very much wished that he would become part of the federal government, ideally as Minister of Transport. We have a lot of good points in the coalition agreement, that would have been the icing on the cake if the Greens, ideally with Toni Hofreiter at the helm, had got the Ministry of Transport. I think it’s a shame that he didn’t get the Ministry of Agriculture either.

Claudia Köhler, member of the state parliament from Unterhaching: Of course, as a Bavarian and Unterhachinger, I am a bit disappointed, we would have liked the Minister Dr. Happy rider. But actually it’s a good thing that we have so many suitable minds, but not countless ministerial posts. And finally there will one day be able ministers with decisive responsibility, that counts. This cabinet will turn things around in order to maintain our livelihoods, to tackle real climate protection and species protection, and Toni will not be quiet either, I’m sure.
