More dangerous than the question of whether one sometimes dreams of a different life is whether one would choose one’s own life if one had the choice. The idea that we can always choose and shape our lives is simply not true. That is one of the meaner lies of the individualistic-capitalist complex. Decisions usually come about on their own, fate often plays a role, and there is no turning back. Except for someone like Saša Stanišić, all the wonders of fiction are performed.
