New catalog of fines: turf is getting more expensive

The new catalog of fines applies from today. It is now becoming more expensive, especially for speeders: in many cases, they even have to pay twice as much. What fines are threatened now?

By Jan Zimmermann, ARD capital studio

The new catalog of fines was a difficult birth. This was preceded by long negotiations between the federal government and the federal states. Several federal states demanded tougher driving ban rules. Speeders should lose their license faster.

From the end of April 2020, the new, stricter rules came into force. But what followed was an outcry from the ADAC and many motorists. Federal Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer also wanted to withdraw the new regulation. Because of a formal error, the new sentences were actually suspended after a few weeks.

A political dispute ensued between the Federal Transport Minister, the federal states and the opposition. Result: The tougher driving ban rules are not coming after all. Furthermore, motorists are threatened with a driving ban at 31 km / h in urban areas and 41 km / h outside urban areas or if they repeatedly drive more than 25 km / h too fast.

Instead of stricter driving ban rules, they agreed on higher fines. Cyclists and pedestrians should be better protected in this way. However, the new fines are only beneficial if the violations are discovered. The Deutsche Verkehrswacht is calling for more police checks, especially at danger spots. These are the new rules:

Illegal parking and stopping in the second row

For example, if you stop or park on a sidewalk or bike path, on a protective strip or in the second row, you have to pay a higher fine, for example 55 instead of the previous 20 euros for parking in the second row. It becomes even more expensive if someone is handicapped or endangered on a sidewalk or bike path, for example if a pedestrian has to use the street. Up to 80 euros are then due, with property damage even 100 euros. In addition, there is a point in Flensburg in such cases. If you park unauthorized in a parking space for the disabled, you now pay 55 instead of 35 euros.

Parking in places for electric cars

In many cities and municipalities, more and more parking spaces are being allocated for e-cars and car sharing vehicles. If you park your car in such a parking lot, you have to pay 55 euros immediately if you are caught.

Ignoring the emergency lane

The handicap of emergency vehicles is also punished more severely. Anyone who parks in front of a fire brigade access and obstructs an ambulance pays a fine of 100 euros and receives one point. There is also a tightening of the emergency lanes: If you do not train them or use them yourself to get ahead faster, you can expect a fine of between 200 and 320 euros, two points and a month’s driving ban.

Over the speed limit

In many cases, speeders now have to pay twice as much. In urban areas 16 to 20 km / h too fast costs 70 euros instead of the previous 35. Truck drivers have to turn at walking pace, otherwise 70 euros are also due.

Anyone who is 16 to 20 km / h too fast outside of built-up areas pays 60 instead of the previous 30 euros if they are caught. And the faster it gets, the more expensive it gets. As before, there are points in Flensburg from 21 km / h above the maximum speed.
