There are new details on the Amy Winehouse biopic “Back to Black”: A first photo shows leading actress Marisa Abela in her role.

Marisa Abela (26) will embody singer Amy Winehouse (1983-2011) in the biopic “Back to Black”. Studiocanal now has published a first photo, which features the actress in her role. Abela wears the typical sweeping hairstyle of the musician, who died in 2011 at the age of 27.

“Fifty Shades of Gray” director Sam Taylor-Johnson (55) is shooting the film about the life of the British soul singer. Studiocanal is collaborating with Focus Features and Monumental Pictures. According to the makers “Back to Black” will feature “Amy Winehouse’s lively years in London in the early years and her intense journey to fame”. The film will start production on January 16th in London. The film title is based on a song and an album by the late singer.

Sam Taylor-Johnson has already made a film about the music icon

Sam Taylor-Johnson has experience making films about great musicians. The Brit, who had previously made a name for herself as a visual artist, made her first feature film about John Lennon (1940-1980). “Nowhere Boy” is about the younger years of the later Beatles. Abela played in the series “Industry” and “Cobra” among others and was seen alongside James Norton (37) in the crime thriller “Rogue Agent”.
