Neuschwanstein: Should the castle become a UNESCO World Heritage Site? – Bavaria

Normally, the Unesco title is highly coveted. In Schwangau, however, some fear that only more tourists will visit the world-famous castle. In June they vote on an application. A cancellation would have far-reaching consequences.

You will be a bit surprised in Paris, about this small, sometimes stubborn village in the Allgäu. It actually works like this: Potential world heritage sites submit an application, the Unesco Commission advises, great trembling, then the bid – sheer joy. In Schwangau, at the foot of Neuschwanstein Castle, some locals think the Unesco Commission in Paris can keep its title. Everyone in the world knows the castle anyway, such a label only brings more tourists, even higher construction costs and altogether too much trouble.
