Neuschwanstein Castle: Forest fire a few kilometers away – Bavaria

A forest fire broke out on a mountain peak a few kilometers from the world-famous Neuschwanstein Castle. As the police reported on Friday, the emergency services were on duty until late in the evening on Thursday. The extinguishing work was continued on Friday because there were still embers. Already in March there was a forest fire in the German-Austrian border area not far from Neuschwanstein.

This time, according to the information, an area that was difficult to access at the 1726 meter high Zunderkopf near Hohenschwangau in Schwangau was on fire. The fire is said to have spread to about 100 square meters. A police helicopter and a transport helicopter continued to fight the fire from the air on Friday. The firefighters also had to be brought to the scene with the police helicopter. “Because the summit area is very steep, the fire brigade forces are secured on site by members of the Füssen and Bavaria mountain rescue service,” the police reported. The local fire brigades from Schwangau and Füssen are supported by special forest firefighting teams from the Kempten and Oberstdorf fire brigades. The police also use their alpine task force. Due to the persistent drought, forest fires and wildfires have repeatedly occurred throughout Bavaria and other federal states.
