Nestlé confirms the closure of the Buitoni factory in Caudry after the scandal

A year after the contaminated pizza affair, Nestlé announced this Thursday morning the permanent closure of the Buitoni factory in Caudry, implicated in the health scandal of pizzas contaminated with the Escherichia coli bacterium. This decision leaves behind dozens of employees who say they have “nothing to do” with it.

The fate of the site, whose activity has already been suspended since the beginning of March due, according to Nestlé, to a drop in sales, was revealed to the unions during a meeting scheduled for 9 a.m. After the cold shower, the Nestlé group assured that “no dismissal will be notified before December 31, 2023”. It was specified that Nestlé “commits at the same time to launching a process of finding a solid and lasting recovery solution for the factory” and to offering the 140 employees “an opportunity for internal reclassification”.

Judicial investigation still ongoing

The site is at the heart of the scandal for having produced frozen pizzas with raw dough from the Fraîch’Up range, which could have caused the death of two children and the poisoning of dozens of others by the Escherichia coli bacteria. A judicial investigation has been open since last May, in Paris, for manslaughter in the case of two victims and involuntary injuries for 14 others, according to a judicial source.
