When it comes to “ends and new beginnings” in Bayreuth, it’s worth taking a look at a work by Hans-Jürgen Syberberg. Three decades after the end of World War II, Winifred Wagner, the principal on the Hügel during the Nazi era, had generously confided in the filmmaker; and in Syberberg’s documentary, which lasts several hours, there is a scene that is so abysmal that once you’ve seen it, you can’t forget it.
