Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed cautious optimism following Donald Trump’s election victory, acknowledging the potential impact on U.S. policies towards Ukraine. As uncertainty looms, Zelensky’s praise aims to foster a positive relationship with Trump, who has previously supported Ukraine. Despite concerns over Trump’s unpredictable stance, some believe it could lead to beneficial outcomes. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s reliance on U.S. military assistance raises alarms about Europe’s ability to fill any potential gaps.
The Impact of the 2024 US Election on Ukraine
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has praised Donald Trump following his election victory in the United States, as apprehensions about future policies loom large in Ukraine. The potential implementation of Trump’s campaign promises regarding Ukraine could significantly alter the landscape.
“The most critical news today is the United States election,” declared a spokesperson on Ukrainian television. For months, the American electoral race has notably influenced the situation in Ukraine. But now that the elections are concluded, what does this mean for Ukraine?
The day following the election brings uncertainty and a multitude of questions. Ukrainian journalist Yuriy Fiser expressed his dismay, stating, “Today marks a dark day for us. We’ve awakened to a new reality that we must now navigate.”
Trump has asserted that he could swiftly broker a peace deal with Putin to bring an end to the war in Ukraine.
Zelensky’s Strategic Praise for Trump
In a strikingly different response, President Zelensky expressed optimism about a stronger United States under decisive leadership, sharing his thoughts on social media shortly after the election results.
This public display of admiration aims to curry favor with the newly elected Donald Trump. Many in Kyiv’s political sphere are now hopeful for a renewed momentum, recalling that Trump previously took stances that benefitted Ukraine, explained former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba.
“While many in Ukraine hold the Democrats in high regard, they also remember the Democrats’ support for Nord Stream 2, which Trump opposed—not solely for Ukraine’s benefit but for American interests,” Kuleba noted. “Thus, establishing a flexible working relationship with Trump will be essential, especially in terms of crisis management concerning Ukraine.” Though challenging, this collaboration is deemed possible.
Moreover, memories of positive outcomes during Trump’s presidency linger among Ukrainians.
Trump’s Unpredictable Stance on Ukraine
The people of Ukraine are weary from the ongoing conflict and are increasingly disillusioned with their Western allies, who, despite substantial support, fall short in meeting the country’s needs. Some suggest that under President Kamala Harris, the situation may have continued along the same lines.
Oleksandr Krajew, director of the North America program at the analytical center Prism, views Trump as a risky figure, but he argues that this unpredictability could yield benefits for Ukraine. “While many of his remarks about Ukraine have been less than favorable, he also claimed he would have provided Ukraine with not 60, but 120 billion in aid and would have taken decisive military action against Moscow if the war had erupted during his presidency,” Krajew explained.
Trump’s contradictory statements make his potential actions difficult to predict. “His unpredictability poses risks, but it also allows for influence; maintaining ongoing communication with Trump, presenting various proposals, and consistent engagement are vital,” Krajew asserted. “While Trump is a wildcard, this unpredictability does not have to be viewed negatively.”
Insights into Trump’s plans for Ukraine were also shared by Hungary’s Prime Minister Orban following discussions with Trump.
The Urgent Need for European Support
However, should Trump follow through on plans to reduce military assistance to Ukraine, the implications could be severe. Current assessments suggest that Europe would struggle to compensate for the loss of American support. Kuleba is already urging Europe to take on a more substantial role.
“For Ukraine, this situation signals the necessity of collaboration with Trump. I’ve never advocated for demonizing him; I simply state the facts,” Kuleba remarked. “Ultimately, Ukraine’s strength resides within its own borders, while Europe possesses the resources and capabilities to assist and assume a leadership position. Now is the time for Europe to step up and take responsibility.”
