The national team will be well prepared for the winter World Cup in Qatar. The Nations League draw made sure of that. It gave Hansi Flick’s team Italy and England as group opponents.

The Nations League is not yet of great importance in this country. But that could change with the third edition. Because in Group 3 of League A, the DFB selection meets both European champions Italy and vice-European champions England. One classic chases the next – just a few weeks before the Winter World Cup in Qatar.

Hansi Flick will therefore have plenty of opportunity before the world tournament to confirm the flawless impression that the team has made against lower-class opponents at the top level – or not. Against England it comes to a hot revenge for the EM-aus. Third group opponent and outsider is Hungary, which, however, also gave the Germans a hard time during the European Championships. The Nations League groups were drawn at the UEFA headquarters in Nyon on Thursday evening.

Nations League: World Cup preparation under competitive conditions

The third “season” of the once unpopular Uefa competition begins with a four-man international match from June 2 to 14, 2022. Just three weeks after the Bundesliga final, national coach Flick can then put his World Cup candidates to an intensive test run.

The other two games in the group will take place between September 22nd and 27th, and thus only two months before the World Cup kick-off. It will be the last international matches before the nomination of the tournament squad for the finals from November 21 to December 18 in the emirate on the Persian Gulf.

The exact schedule is still pending

The exact Nations League schedule is still being tied down by Uefa. The competition will definitely become a European Championship deja vu. England (0: 2) was the last stop in the last sixteen of the tournament this summer, Hungary (2: 2) in the group stage almost stumbling block. Germany won their last competitive game against Italy in the quarter-finals on penalties in 2016.

The international season begins for the DFB-Elf with two test games, one of them on March 26th in Sinsheim probably against an African opponent and a few days later away with Spain or the Netherlands as options already mentioned by Flick.

The Nations League winner will be chosen from among the four group winners in the A-League on June 18, 2023. So far, the DFB selection in the competition has not been successful. In 2018, as the bottom of the group, relegation to the B-League was only avoided by reforming the Uefa mode. In 2020 there was the historic 0: 6 in Spain, the second highest defeat of a German national team.

The three remaining groups in the A-League: Group 1: France, Denmark, Croatia and Austria – Group 2: Spain, Portugal, Switzerland and the Czech Republic – Group 4: Belgium, Netherlands, Poland and Wales
