A survey result on the cultural diversity in the DFB team triggered sharp protests from those responsible. Now the Chancellor has also spoken out on the subject.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz has emphasized the belonging of millions of people with an immigration history to German society – also with regard to the national football team.

“We can be proud that this is also reflected in our national team,” said the SPD politician in the Bundestag. “They are all Germans, they are all our boys.” Scholz stressed, referring to the more than 20 million citizens with an immigration background: “They are part of our society. We will not allow ourselves to be divided.”

A recent survey, which found that one in five Germans would prefer to see more white players in the national team, was met with sharp criticism, including from national coach Julian Nagelsmann. Scholz did not mention the survey in his speech, which dealt with the current security situation in Germany. He added the statements about the national team “in passing,” in his own words.

A few days before the start of the European Championships at home, the Chancellor stressed: “Our country will show its best side this summer of football.” Many are eagerly awaiting good games and guests from all over Europe. The security authorities have also prepared carefully. He therefore says to all citizens: “Don’t let the anticipation of this football festival, of this summer, be taken away from you.”
