The search for a new national coach is apparently over. Julian Nagelsmann appears to be Hansi Flick’s successor and will take over until the 2024 European Championship.
Update from September 19th, 9:30 p.m.: DFB Vice President Hans-Joachim Watzke has denied that an agreement has already been reached with Julian Nagelsmann for the position as the new national coach. “No decision has been made yet,” said the boss of Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday evening before the start at Paris St. Germain in the Champions League on Prime Video: “The committees haven’t even met yet, so no decision can have been made .”
But Nagelsmann is a “top coach, we don’t even have to talk about that,” said Watzke. He could confirm that there are discussions with the 36-year-old trainer. “But you have to see everything else. We just need a timely decision at some point. But we would like to travel to the USA in a good position,” explained Watzke.
Nagelsmann as the new national coach? DFB President Neuendorf reports “good discussions”
First report from September 19th, 11:52 a.m.: Frankfurt – Julian Nagelsmann will probably be the new national coach. Apparently there is a basic agreement between the DFB and Nagelsmann about working together until the home European Championships in 2024. At first they had Picture reported, according to Kicker-The DFB will confirm the report shortly. Accordingly, only the final details need to be clarified. The DFB announced on Tuesday: “There was a first meeting today between DFB President Bernd Neuendorf and Rudi Völler with Julian Nagelsmann.” Neuendorf reported: “We are in good discussions.” However, there was still no talk of an agreement.
There are several reasons for this: Firstly, Nagelsmann’s contract with FC Bayern must be terminated so that he can move to the DFB for a free transfer. As a national coach, the 36-year-old will probably earn significantly less than in Munich. In addition, Nagelsmann’s change at the DFB would have to be approved by the supervisory board and shareholders’ meeting, according to Kicker that can be expected this week.
Nagelsmann apparently agreed with the DFB
Since Flick’s dismissal, Nagelsmann has been the favorite to succeed him as national coach. However, it was unclear for a long time whether the former Bayern coach could imagine working as a national coach of a country. However, Nagelsmann is said to be particularly excited about being able to coach Germany at a home European Championship. It would probably be a unique opportunity. FC Bayern recently signaled that they would let Nagelsmann move to the DFB.
However, since Nagelsmann’s contract will initially only run until the home European Championship, the DFB could make a new attempt with Jürgen Klopp next summer. Klopp is considered by many fans to be the preferred candidate for the role of national coach and could succeed Nagelsmann after the European Championships.
Nagelsmann should succeed Flick as national coach
Nagelsmann, on the other hand, would succeed Hansi Flick, from whom the association separated on September 10th due to continued lack of success. Nagelsmann was relieved of his duties in Munich last March during an international break. Since then he has repeatedly been discussed by various top European clubs such as Real Madrid.
In the 2-1 win against France on September 12th in Dortmund, sports director Rudi Völler temporarily took over as team boss together with Hannes Wolf and ex-national player Sandro Wagner on the German bench. The 63-year-old had already described this as a “one-off” task before the game. The DFB leadership wanted to present a new national coach before October 9th. Then the DFB entourage travels to North America for two international matches against the USA and Mexico. (LuHa)
