Before a song becomes a sales hit, it has often already garnered many likes, hearts and clicks online. An analysis of Tiktok shows that some hits are often hot there days beforehand.

The platform Tiktok seems to be a good indicator of upcoming hits. A music analysis by the online network has shown that in 2023, one in four songs in the German top 100 singles charts had previously gone viral on Tiktok. “The tracks were usually listed on average 12 days before they entered the charts in the ‘Tiktok Hot50’,” Tiktok announced in Hamburg as part of the Reeperbahn Festival. In total, 27 of the 100 most successful songs were first celebrated on Tiktok.

The platform’s users can use their clicks on videos and the use of music in their own video contributions to push up not only new songs by German and international artists. Older songs can also suddenly appear more intensively there and can therefore be viewed again on YouTube and listened to on streaming services, downloaded or even bought as a record or CD. This in turn brings them into the German singles charts.

One example of this is the song “Forever Young” by Alphaville from 1984, which suddenly re-entered the top 100 of the singles charts a few weeks ago and made it to number 52. Shortly before that, the number of video views of the song on Tiktok also skyrocketed. According to Tiktok, the reason for this was, on the one hand, the song’s 40th anniversary and, on the other hand, the fact that more and more Tiktok users were incorporating the German cult band’s classic into their videos.
