95-year-old “Best New Artist” at Latin Grammys

She always wanted to be a singer and Ángela Álvarez never gave up on her dream. She had tears in her eyes at the Latin Grammys.
“It’s never too late” – with these words and tears in her eyes, 95-year-old Ángela Álvarez won Best Newcomer at the Latin Grammy Awards in Las Vegas. At the ceremony on Thursday evening (local time), the “Best New Artist” category was shared. The other winner was Mexican musician and songwriter Silvana Estrada (25).
Born in Cuba and residing in the United States, Álvarez said: “For those who have dreams, even when life is difficult, there is always a way out.” Álvarez once fled Fidel Castro’s Cuba under difficult circumstances.
Álvarez was accompanied by her grandson, the composer Carlos José Álvarez. He recorded her songs and produced the album in 2021, for which she won the Latin Grammys. Álvarez had wanted to be a singer since she was young.
