No matter how honorable the intentions of Wolfgang M., the climate activist who has been taken into preventive detention, may be, the form of protest he has chosen disregards the basic principles of democracy.

A hunger strike is moral blackmail. And can therefore be a legitimate tool in the political battle of opinions. Namely, when the addressee is clear and can answer on the same level: moral – or immoral. However, if the demands made are taken seriously, the hunger strike of a climate activist locked up in Munich could only be ended at a political and institutional level. A prime example of communication doomed to fail from the start. Therefore he is wrong. And consequently extremely dangerous.
