Munich: What the “Kino am Olympiasee” has to offer in the 2024 season – Munich

If the temperatures rise, your mood drops. At least for cinema operators who regularly despair at the first rays of sunshine in spring: No matter how good their program is, they can’t avoid excursions, visits to beer gardens and other outdoor activities. This has been confirmed once again in the past few weeks; in early summer temperatures, the number of visitors fell significantly. You can also watch films when the weather is nice; the open-air cinema season starts in Munich in mid-May.

As in previous years, it starts in the Olympic Park: The organizers of “Kino am Olympiasee” will roll out their outdoor screen from May 16th, significantly earlier than the competition. Simon Verhoevens kicks things off Milli Vanilli-Biopic “Girl You Know It’s True”, which is definitely worth seeing, and not just because of its 80s Munich scenes. In the days and weeks that follow, more recent German cinema hits are also on the program, such as “Chantal in Fairytale Land”, “A Million Minutes” or “Wochenendrebellen”. Last year’s hits are also shown, “Barbie”, “Wonka” and “Anatomy of a Case”.

By popular demand, more films are being shown in the original English language version, such as “Dune: Part Two” or “Bob Marley: One Love”. Thanks to LED screens suitable for daylight, there are also performances in the afternoon and early evening; the focus here is primarily on children’s and family films such as “Out of the Pond”, “Checker Tobi” or “New Stories from Pumuckl”. Even if these are still shown regularly in cinemas, the organizers Reinhard Strasser and Patrick Diesing do not see themselves as competition. “Cinema at Olympiasee wants to be more than just a screening station for films,” says Diesing.

In addition to the obligatory beer garden directly at Lake Olympia, there will also be live shows, among other things Comedy with Michael Mittermeier, poetry slams or evenings with the Bavarian Outdoor Film Festival. The biggest topic this summer is likely to be football: in June, the Champions League final and some games from the 2024 European Football Championship will be broadcast live.

Also in June, “Kino am Olympiasee” will have other competition: the city’s oldest open-air cinema opens on June 6th and will be held in Westpark for the 30th time “Cinema, moon and stars” instead of. There will also be open-air screenings at the Munich Film Festival again, also in Westpark. The “pop-up summer cinema” at the HFF Munich has to be canceled this year (but should come back in 2025), but the largest open-air cinema in Munich has already been confirmed: “Kino am Königsplatz” will be back in 2024 after its resurrection last year instead of. Nice views, now all we have to do is let the weather play along.
