Munich: toy museum remains closed due to energy costs – Munich

The Munich Toy Museum is closed until the end of March due to increased energy costs. “In November, the forecast was that heating costs would increase two and a half times. For our private museum, that would have meant additional costs of 10,000 euros from January to the end of March,” explained museum director Helena Steiger Evening News this decision.

According to its own statements, the museum in the old town hall tower has not been open since January 9th, and visitors are to be welcomed again from April 1st.

According to the city, the collection of the Munich toy museum goes back to the year 1800. As the AZ writes, according to the culture department, the toy museum is the only one of 50 museums and just as many galleries and exhibition rooms in Munich that is currently closed due to high energy prices. Steiger’s father founded the house in 1983, and in 2020 the daughter took over the management of the private museum.

The exhibition at Marienplatz presents toys from Europe and America on four floors. The collection includes exhibits from antiquity to the present day. But what is shown in the museum are by no means all toys, Steiger once said to the SZ. “We have a lot more. Hundreds of thousands at least, but at some point we stopped counting.” The museum is more about giving an insight into the history of toys than showing the full range. This insight is now denied to interested parties for the time being.
