Getting into the cockpit with an aerobatic plane takes a lot of courage. The reward is: pure adrenaline. SZ reporter Korbinian Eisenberger dared to do it. He flew with the pilot Lorenz Eberherr over the Inn valley, in inverted flight, head over, and experienced while spinning what a crash must feel like (SZ Plus): The ground is racing towards you. Lorenz Eberherr is an aerobatic pilot and aircraft tinkerer. When he’s not in the cockpit, he repairs old cars and airplanes, at home in his workshop in Kirchseeon in the Ebersberg district. He sees this as a contribution to sustainability, not buying a new vehicle every three years, crammed full of electronics that hardly anyone understands. He loves the mechanics that he has mastered himself.
The enthusiasm for flying came as a child when building model airplanes with my father. For 23 years, the pilot has been getting into his propeller plane and letting it whirl high in the air. It’s more than a hobby. The height of fall is great. Several aerobatic pilots have died in crashes, including some of Eberherr’s friends. The 51-year-old says there are reasons he’s still alive. He respects the weather forecast. He knows what to do when vision fades. He doesn’t panic. However, there is still a residual risk.
