Munich today – news from May 19th, 2022 – Munich

The first real play I went to in my life was a performance of Friedrich Dürrenmatt’s “The Physicists”. I hadn’t read the play beforehand, so up until that point I had no idea what it was about. Nevertheless, this one sentence, once heard, stuck with me to this day: “The content of physics concerns the physicists, the effects all people.”

I’ve thought about this quote a lot in the past few days. Research and science are free in Germany. Nobody in this country is allowed to dictate to scientists what they have to do research for – and certainly not with whom. That’s important and that’s a good thing. But those who enjoy freedom also bear responsibility. And the question must be asked when this freedom will reach moral limits.

The investigative section of the Süddeutsche Zeitung dealt with this question in weeks of research. The search for answers also led us to the Technical University in Munich’s Maxvorstadt. There, a professor published scientific articles for years with a Chinese colleague who is close to the military. The two researched rocket propulsion.

We met the top of the TUM university and asked about cooperations like this. The article on TUM (SZ Plus) is part of the China Science Investigation, a Europe-wide research by eleven media partners that examined scientific cooperation with Chinese research institutions.
