When the Elbphilharmonie celebrated its fifth birthday in November, I was doubly happy. For the people of Hamburg, because they can call an iconic building their own. For the people of Munich, because there was no longer any talk of the city of Hamburg suffering in any way from the financial burden associated with the construction of the extravagant concert hall. There is no longer any talk of the billions that the project is said to have cost. That gave me courage for Munich and its concert hall in the Werksviertel. Because unlike the Elphi, it should one day not only be beautiful, but also smart – and money in such dimensions seems to me a mysterious fluid anyway. (I’m in charge of the culture department, not the economy, so I might be forgiven for saying these words.)
