Munich today – news from March 27th, 2022 – Munich

It lies there like a sleeping giant: 150 meters long and 75 meters high, a disk house made of white concrete and lattice structures. The Arabella high-rise has been making history for more than half a century. Freddie Mercury, David Bowie and Led Zeppelin recorded their hits in the former Musicland studios in the basement. On the floors above, hotel guests stayed, business people, actresses, politicians, playboys and playgirls lived. In the “city in one house” shops, hotel, clinic, offices, apartments and spa are stacked on top of each other. Countless experiences lie between the old walls.

But the house will soon “have reached the end of its life cycle after more than 60 years of operation,” says Christian Huber from Bayerische Hausbau GmbH & Co. KG. The facade is crumbling, the lines are dilapidated and it would no longer be worth renovating. The house is scheduled to be demolished in 2030.

So it was time for a visit: I wanted to find out who lives in the house today and hear the stories that happened there. So I met one of the first residents, Professor Monika Glettler, who remembers that there were gifts from the property management at the beginning. A few floors down, I spoke to Sebastian Horvat, a student who had just moved in and who was trying to set up his one-room apartment to save as much space as possible. Theodor Lamba invited me to his green apartment full of plants. In Gabi Iffland’s office, I stood next to the dildos and vibrators that she sells to her customers. I had a fantastic view over the east of Munich with Gerlinde Kimpel, who feels a bit like she’s on vacation every day.

This story is about the surprising, funny, sad and strange moments that the residents experienced (SZ Plus).
