And if you want to transfer this observation and stick to slang, then over the past weekend it can justifiably be said: Yes, Munich is also alive! Above all and still in the university district – despite the ban on glass bottles that has now been introduced. And despite the closure around the Türkenstrasse: Because too many people met in the area on Friday, the police first cleared the area and then closed it. They kept this tactic on Saturday. A procedure that has at least one success: there were hardly any violations of the glass bottle ban, and if so, the culprits were so discerning that the officials did not have to impose a fine.
The problem with the police’s approach: The blocking of Türkenstrasse and the streets and squares around it has not reduced the number of people celebrating, just the space for them. As has often been the case recently, the action has shifted to the area in the immediate vicinity of the university. On Saturday, the police counted around 500 people on Professor-Huber-Platz, together with the hype on Ludwigstrasse and Leopoldstrasse, several thousand people should have gathered again. This is annoying for the residents and, from a corona point of view, certainly not the best way to spend your free time.
I was out and about in town on Saturday, watched the party and talked to the celebrants and the police. Oh yes, and then there is of course the big question to which no one really has an answer yet: How will the party go on? The subject will definitely keep us busy, even if the plans for closing Ludwigstrasse on the weekends are becoming more and more concrete.
