My colleague Ulrike Steinbacher writes that many Munich residents are still ignoring climate change, even if the last generation is sticking to the Stachus. Climate change can already be clearly felt in Munich, according to the German Weather Service. It can be recognized, for example, by the so-called heavy rain events, i.e. when it rains heavily and the water masses flood shops and underground car parks.
In order to prevent such events, Munich needs more areas where rainwater can seep away or stand for a while. One solution would be more green – instead, Munich is being built because there is a lack of apartments. So the question is: How do you build new living quarters that can withstand the extreme weather?
The new district of Freiham, for example, is being built according to the sponge city principle: rainwater evaporates and seeps away instead of flowing straight into the sewage system, it also waters trees and green spaces, is stored and can cool down on hot days.
