Munich today – news from February 24th, 2022 – Munich

When we considered this morning at the editorial conference what we could contribute to reporting on the war in Ukraine from a Munich perspective, it quickly became clear that we had to talk to Ukrainians who live here. Then my colleague Michael Zirnstein spoke up and told a very special story.

On Wednesday afternoon, when it was not yet clear that war would break out hours later, he met two artists who were performing in the GOP Variety Theater. They perform a number in which one, Mikhail Shashin, juggles the other, Dmytro Taratutenko, on his feet and twirls through the air, leaving the audience dizzy – and relying blindly on the partner. The special thing about the constellation: Shashin is Russian, Taratutenko is Ukrainian. Here Michael Zirnstein tells how the two deal with the political situation (SZ Plus).

Of course, we also held talks with other Ukrainians. In my opinion, there are moving reports (SZ Plus) about how relatives reported to them this morning about the outbreak of war in their country and how they are now trying to help. And we were out and about on the streets of Munich today, talking to demonstrators in front of the Russian Consulate General, asking how city politicians were reacting to the outbreak of war – and asking how things were with Valery Gergiev, the chief conductor of the Munich Philharmonic and a Putin supporter , continues. You can find these impressions here (SZ Plus).

THE DAY IN MUNICH

A discarded cigarette butt is doomed to a gas station robber The 25-year-old raided ten gas stations in the Munich city area, one even twice. The police track him down through forensic crime scene work – as they are known primarily from American crime series.

Woman killed by headshot – court acquits husband Srecko S. is said to have shot his wife, who was 20 years his junior, because she had separated from him. But the jury had doubts about the course of the crime: How did the cartridge get into the victim’s hand?

catfish in the surf What a big fish: During an exercise in the Oberschleißheim regatta facility, police officers come across a two-meter-long catfish. So now Munich also has its sea monster.

Space without the obligation to consume – is that possible? The Signa Group’s plans for the old academy’s courtyard are primarily based on open-air gastronomy – much to the displeasure of local politicians. What do you imagine the project to be?
