Munich today – news from February 21st, 2022 – Munich

If you want to know what constitutes a German trade tax haven, you only have to walk a bit through the streets of Grünwald and look at the mailboxes. Again and again you come across houses that look as if two or three smaller companies from the law firm or medical practice category would fit in. But if you look at the mailboxes, you might think that there is room for an entire commercial area inside.

The reason in many of these cases is presumably that companies operate a “virtual company headquarters” there, which some office landlords in Grünwald openly advertise. Because Grünwald has an extremely low rate for trade tax in a national comparison, about half as high as in neighboring Munich. This is why almost 8,000 companies are based in the 11,000-inhabitant community. For several weeks we have been dealing with the question of whether this is fair, whether it is still politically desirable – and where the line to tax evasion actually lies.

This question is now also being asked by Andrea Tandler, who, with a partner for arranging mask deals in the Corona crisis, pocketed a commission of 48 million. The public prosecutor’s office is investigating the two on suspicion of tax evasion, as my colleague Klaus Ott reports (SZ Plus). He also writes that the two reject the accusation – and explains what it has to do with the Grünwald trade tax haven.

And if you’re going to Grünwald in the near future and you’d rather relax than worry about tax evasion, then why not take the paths along the Isar.
