Munich today – news from February 18th, 2022 – Munich

There are anniversaries that one would prefer not to acknowledge, that one would like to suppress, that one does not like to remember – but which simply cannot be erased from memory. So anniversaries of terrible events of all kinds. This Saturday marks the 20th anniversary of the shooting spree in Eching and Freising, in which a young man first killed two former work colleagues, then his former school director and finally himself.

In the meantime there have certainly been deeds that are anchored more deeply in Germany’s collective memory – because there were more deaths, because more of them were shown on television. The keywords Erfurt and Winnenden come to mind. But in Freising and the surrounding area, the events of February 19, 2002 are still very present. My colleagues from the editorial team there interviewed people who had to witness what was happening at the time (SZ Plus). They describe what that day did to them, how they processed it – or how it still works in them. The psychologist Hans-Joachim Röthlein explains how people can regain their balance after such a shock (SZ Plus). At that time he looked after students and teachers, and later he was also deployed in Erfurt and Winnenden.

The killing sprees in Eching and Freising and only two months later at a high school in Erfurt also had a lasting impact on the work of the police. At that time, she realized that she had to proceed very differently in these life-threatening operational situations, as such events are dryly called in the technical jargon. Two police officers, one former and one active, gave me a few basic insights into the development of operational concepts (SZ Plus). And a police officer told me from his practical experience what could be improved, in terms of training and equipment. But secretly everyone has been hoping that they will be spared being reminded of yet another anniversary of a horrific event they had to witness.
