Munich today – news from December 29th, 2021 – Munich

In the early summer of 2020, Munich is slowly recovering from the first lockdown. And everyone is talking about how important the people are who keep society going. They are called Corona heroes and people clapped for them on the balconies. And then? At that time we met five women who told us how grateful they are for a kind word from their customers. How important it would be to them to be valued and that that could easily be expressed in a little more wages. A year and a half later we visited three of them again and asked: What has changed since then?

The answers that the three women gave us are quite different. But it quickly becomes clear that there is no more recognition. The experienced geriatric nurse Renata Moszyński de Nałęcz says that you have to be born to care. Not everyone can do that. “I do, I’m married to Foster.” She is glad that her retirement home survived a corona outbreak relatively well a year ago. Despite the applause, nothing has changed for the better – on the contrary.

The young nurse Celine Schmager is still in good spirits. She works in the Corona ward in the University Hospital Rechts der Isar and is happy that thanks to the vaccination, she only has to move a few people to the intensive care unit. “Actually only those who have not been vaccinated.” And the educator Carlota Leoz Navarro is annoyed that, even after eight years of professional experience in Germany, she still earns less than her German colleagues. But becoming a German worker costs a lot of time and money – despite the EU. Nevertheless, she is happy: she and her husband are expecting their baby in spring.
