When is a classic no longer a classic because everyone perceives it differently anyway? When it comes to the food issue at Christmas, the customs are very different. What is considered classic can usually be easily distinguished into the categories “quick and child-friendly”, “good pastime” and “enjoyment”. My family went through these stages chronologically: The Hawaiian toast phase (four children, very hungry) ended abruptly when the Christ Child brought a raclette (good for vegetarians and if the Christ Child brings nothing else, good instead of presents). The dishes now change from year to year. This doesn’t always bring about peace in advance, but it hasn’t diminished the enjoyment factor.
What do you have on the table? Sausages with potato salad or cabbage? The whole goose? So one of these so-called classics? My colleague Franz Kotteder asked Munich’s top chefs what they serve their families on the holidays. The answers reveal traditional but also very special dishes. From butter chicken “Family & Friends” with vegetables from the oven to sukiyaki with vegetables, tofu and shirataki noodles. And because it’s Christmas, the five chefs also gave us their recipes and their recommendations (SZ Plus).
So if you fall into the pleasure category, you can still be inspired by the tips. It’s too late with my family. The brother-in-law has already killed the deer, the vegetarian sister is not happy about it, but the mess will fix it.
