Munich today – News from April 14th, 2022 – Munich

For decades, the following applied to most adolescents: they got their driver’s license on their 18th birthday, and then at some point they got their own car. It was the same for me. And with the first bit of money I earned myself, I bought a rusty Fiat, which I naturally drove to the university and elsewhere.

Back then, in the 1990s, such behavior was hardly questioned. We had already talked about climate change in school, but the massive problems as we know them today seemed very abstract and very far away. It’s different today: global warming is causing droughts and other extreme weather events all over the world. And, quite honestly: driving a car is (at least in the city) a mobility model from yesterday. I’m quite happy with my MVV subscription, I sold my car a long time ago when I moved to a central area of Munich. Even if it seems quite expensive, such an annual subscription for public transport is significantly cheaper than the maintenance costs of your own car.

If I really need a car – I haven’t forgotten how to drive yet – I use one of the car sharing offers. If necessary, an electric scooter has to do the trick, even if the driving comfort leaves a lot to be desired. There are all sorts of alternatives to the car, the most environmentally friendly of course being the bicycle. More and more Munich residents are pedaling for the climate, even if many cycle paths are still suboptimal despite all the city’s new efforts. I took a look at what other alternatives to private cars there are in the city, what they cost and what they bring in terms of air conditioning (SZ Plus).
