Josephine Schefzky was a celebrated singer in the 1870s; she celebrated triumphs at the Munich court theater, where she made her debut in 1868, as well as on other German stages. In view of these successes, it was inevitable that King Ludwig II wanted to hear the diva, and indeed – he was so used to it – exclusively, without the presence of other, possibly incomprehensible listeners.
