Munich: Irish Pub Molly Malone’s in Haidhausen in the test – Munich

Molly Malone. This is actually a well-known Irish folk song and is considered the unofficial anthem of Dublin. The ballad tells the story of an Irish fishmonger who pushes her cart full of fresh fish and mussels through the narrow and busy streets of Dublin and dies early of a fever. A quiet, beguiling song, sad and romantic at the same time.

Molly Malone is the namesake of an Irish pub at Kellerstraße 21 in Haidhausen, under whose green balustrade many guests gather late on Friday evenings. The night is young, the outside temperature is just bearable and, as if drawn by the story of the Irish fishmonger, a good dozen young people are in front of the pub and toasting with drinks. Three streets intersect at Molly Malone’s, making the restaurant a hub where the neighborhood meets on the weekends.

Inside the shop you will find an international audience with a good mix of ages. The wood-panelled interior, the stacked whiskey bottles and the bulging cardboard boxes on the corners and walls give you the feeling of really being on the Emerald Isle for a moment. The pub lighting is very bright. This is good for orientation, but it means that there is no really rustic atmosphere.

Mollys Malone’s is neither a loud party bar nor a contemplative pub to switch off. It’s something in between. The two long counters invite you to linger and get to know each other. The playlist is based on current pop songs instead of classic folk music or well-known bands from Ireland. So the Irish fishmonger’s musical legacy doesn’t really play a role at Molly Malone’s.

There is a rich selection of local dishes and drinks. The Guinness ordered arrives quickly and is professionally tapped. The drinks menu offers a large selection of different types of whiskey, which are traditionally sorted according to the location of the distillery.

The range of food is also very typical of the country. Options include Irish Stew, Shepherd’s Pie, and of course Fish and Chips, which can be enjoyed late into the evening at the counter. Mollys Malone’s: A convivial pub in a great location with a few blemishes that are easy to overlook.
