the Southgerman newspaper celebrates its 77th anniversary – and numerous invited guests from politics, society and business accept the invitation to the State Theater on Munich’s Gärtnerplatz. Among them was former Chancellor Angela Merkel, who, as soon as she got out of her limousine, received the first requests for photos and autographs from passers-by.
Among the invited guests was Charlotte Knobloch, President of the Jewish community in Munich and Upper Bavaria and Munich honorary citizen, accompanied here by the deputy SZ editor-in-chief Alexandra Föderl-Schmid.
The actress Michaela May was accompanied by her husband, the director Bernd Schadewald.
Representatives from politics included Minister of State for Culture Claudia Roth (Greens), who is welcomed here by former SZ editor-in-chief Kurt Kister, …
… and Wolfgang Heubisch (right, FDP), Vice President of the Bavarian State Parliament, who was photographed with FDP politician Helmut Markwort and his partner, the tabloid journalist Patricia Riekel.

The former CSU chairman Erwin Huber (right) used the meeting before the start of the event for an exchange with Munich’s economics officer Clemens Baumgärtner and municipal officer Kristina Frank.
The long-standing director of Bavarian Broadcasting, Ulrich Wilhelm, and newspaper publisher Dirk Ippen also did the honors.
The Russian Irina Revina-Hofmann – known in Munich for her demonstrations against Russian President Vladimir Putin – used the event for a pro-Ukrainian “stop the war” statement. She also wore a chain with the picture of the imprisoned Russian opposition politician Alexej Navalny.
The editors Roman Deininger (left) and Max Hägler then entertained the guests with a slam of letters to the editor.
“We want to be the best newspaper in this country,” said Editor-in-Chief Wolfgang Krach Süddeutsche Zeitung for the present and the future. “And so are we.”
