Munich: How chess lessons help the children in focus schools – Munich

Concentration, creativity and well-considered action: In several schools in Munich, chess is on the schedule alongside math and German. The concept is called “The King’s Plan” and is intended to help transfer strategies from the board to everyday life.

Ranija and Felix sit across from each other in the classroom and brood. The third graders push pawns, bishops and knights across a chessboard and try to remember the position of the pieces they just saw on the board. “How does castling work again?” Asks the eight-year-old. Chess trainers came to the elementary school on Guldeinstrasse. Victoria Berdin and Martin Bauer did chess yoga with the children – the scales for the tower, they stretched diagonally for the bishop – and repeated the properties of the individual chess pieces. Now they are doing a concentration exercise. A game situation that the children looked at for a while hangs on the whiteboard, but is now covered with a red cloth. Have the students recreate them.
