Munich: Forecasts for vacation travel – Munich

Empty classes, full trains, full streets: Deutsche Bahn, ADAC and Munich Airport are expecting plenty of traffic at the start of the summer holidays this Thursday. Despite rising incidence figures in many holiday regions, many travelers are likely to be drawn to the south. “It’s getting full again,” said Alexander Kreipl, traffic expert at ADAC Südbayern, on Tuesday.

On the first weekends of the summer holidays in other federal states, there were around 16,700 traffic jam reports across Germany – around 3,700 more than in 2019, the year before the pandemic, according to Kreipl. An important driver is the changed travel behavior: people would travel by car more often again, also in order not to have to fly. If the summer holidays start now in Bavaria, there could be more traffic jams than before Corona, the expert estimates.

Anyone traveling around Munich on the A 99 and A 8 in the direction of Salzburg would have to stand in the line of cars. Kreipl is expecting the first vacationers on Thursday, but he expects the really heavy traffic on Friday and Saturday. There are also construction sites, for example on the A 9 towards Nuremberg and the A 95 towards Garmisch-Partenkirchen. It should also be tight on the passes to Austria, on the Tauern and on the Brenner.

Kreipl advises that departure on weekdays should be avoided. Otherwise, travelers should leave as early as possible on longer car journeys. If you only want to go to Lake Garda, you can leave in the late afternoon and avoid the worst traffic jams.

If you want to go abroad, you have to observe the entry regulations of the respective countries. Even those who only drive through Austria must either be vaccinated, recovered or tested. This is checked randomly at the borders.

“The car vacation is very popular again,” says Rudolf Vogler, also from ADAC. Many of the classic vacation destinations that can be reached by air struggle with high incidences. Your own car may seem safer.

Deutsche Bahn introduced its summer timetable in mid-June. That means more ICE trains and more journeys. As every year, one expects more travelers to and from Munich. Masks must be worn on the trains. What kind of mask varies from state to state. In Bavaria, an FFP2 mask is mandatory.

People are also preparing for the start of the holiday at Munich Airport. According to a spokesman, additional staff will be on duty there to inform travelers of the distance rules when queuing. Masks are required on airplanes. Almost 1,600 take-offs and landings are planned for the weekend. Compared to the first holiday weekend in 2020, the number has doubled. The pre-pandemic level has not yet been reached, however, twice as many aircraft would have to take off and land again. What has remained the same – despite the increasing incidence in the three-digit range: The most popular destination for the Germans is Mallorca, Mallorca.
