In front of the FC Bayern basketball hall at Westpark, an electric car belonging to the sponsor, which was on display for advertising purposes, burned out completely on Wednesday night. No one was injured. The police estimate the damage at more than 100,000 euros. The 13th police station, which is responsible for arson, has begun investigating the cause of the fire.
At around two o’clock in the morning, a passerby noticed the car on fire on the side of Siegenburger Strasse and called the police. The fire brigade was alerted and was able to extinguish the fire within a few minutes, but could not prevent the BMW i5 from becoming a total write-off. The platform on which the car was standing was slightly damaged.
BMW has been a sponsor of FC Bayern basketball since this season and is the namesake of their home stadium, the former Rudi Sedlmayer Hall. Another car is on display in front of the main entrance on Grasweg. The first game of the semi-final series for the German championship against the Würzburg Baskets was to be played in the arena on Wednesday evening.
The initial investigations by the fire investigators are still going in all directions, and a technical defect has not been ruled out, nor has an intentional act been committed. In this case, connections with two other series of fires are even being examined: firstly, the one that occurred during the construction phase of the new multifunctional arena in the Olympic Park, where FC Bayern basketball will play some of its top games in the future. Secondly, with the attacks that were primarily carried out on infrastructure facilities, but which have also affected BMW electric cars.
