Munich: DJ Mathias Kaden in Harry Klein – Munich

There is a light in the eyes of the DJs and ravers interviewed when they talk about the underground origins of the Thuringian techno scene in the 1990s in the fifth episode of the ARD documentary series “Techno Haus Deutschland”, which is well worth seeing. One hears of disused GDR industrial buildings and warehouses that were still connected to the power grid and could therefore be converted into techno floors without further ado; of endless games of cat and mouse with the police; and last but not least from an almost limitless euphoria and spirit of optimism, which broke ground at the mostly illegal parties. Under the lure of the forbidden, people danced a little better to this music, which swept over the new federal states with the first editions of the Love Parade.

And so the DJ career of the Thuringian Mathias Kaden began in a place that was once hijacked in a similar manner: in the legendary “Muna” near the 3,500-strong community of Bad Klosterlausnitz, whose barracks were used as an ammunition store during NVA times . In “Techno Haus Deutschland” Kaden tells the story of a house and techno enthusiastic clique from the area who celebrated such a lavish and jam-packed birthday party in the barracks in 1994 that they were finally able to establish it as a legal venue.

In 1998, as a 17-year-old, he stood behind the decks for the first time in the Muna and made an impression as a specialist for melodic and heavily sample-based vocal house, which soon made him the resident DJ of the club. With his international reputation, he is still the flagship there to this day, which is not surprising when you listen to Kaden’s DJ sets, in-house productions and remix work.

On the one hand, he shines on albums like “Energetic” with wonderful homages to the roots of classical house music pumping forward in four-four time, on the other hand, he skilfully shows his dubbed and ambient side with his Japanese-inspired project Mathimidori. In Harry Klein, Mathias Kaden can now be seen primarily in the role in which he once went out into the wide world from Thuringia: as housemaster before the Lord.
