A person is trapped in the water at the Flaucher. At the moment, around 302 cubic meters of Isar water rush through at the Munich gauge, and reporting level 1 was exceeded in the afternoon. What further developments are expected by Monday morning.
When the Isar swells and at the same time disaster reports come in from the west of Germany, from the Berchtesgadener Land, from the Salzburger Land and from Tyrol, then people from Munich can look worriedly into the river bed.
Abundant rainfalls on the edge of the Alps bring the Isar a lot of inflow from the Loisach, which in the Oberland is in parts quite excessive (reporting level 3). On the Isar itself, however, the situation is still comparatively quiet. On Sunday afternoon, 302 cubic meters of Isar water rushed through the Munich gauge – that’s a raging Isar, but far less than the record volume of August 2005, when 1050 cubic meters per second flowed through Munich at a level of 542 centimeters. The level was on Sunday around 5 p.m. at 253 centimeters.
Reporting level 1 is already reached at a stand of 240 centimeters. The entire Isar foreland is then flooded between Thalkirchen and Corneliusbrücke.
Rescue operation on the Flaucher: the fire brigade has to save a person
Around 4 p.m., the rescue workers in Munich triggered a major alarm because a man was trapped on an island below the Flauchersteg by the raging and swelling Isar. With a large contingent the jetty was closed for the rescue operation, which initially dragged on because it was not clear how many people might have to be freed from that island.
A police helicopter circled over Thalkirchen and Sendling in the area of the Flauchersteg for a long time, while diving and motorboat groups from the professional fire brigade got ready for action. Eventually the chiefs of operations decided to rescue the fire brigade by motorboat, which was secured with a rope at the Flaucher Bridge against the rapid current. The man was recovered unharmed, the police did not disclose further details.
The emergency services showed relief after the difficult rescue – because rescuers have to put themselves in danger with such an action. That is probably why so many divers and other helpers were ready and had opened a lot of equipment in the area of the Schinderkreppe.
The man’s rescue was also urgent because the authorities are expecting the Isar to swell again for Monday night. By the end of the rescue operation, the Isar level in Munich was 258 centimeters, with a strong upward trend. By Monday morning, reporting level 2 is expected in Munich, i.e. a level of more than 300 centimeters. At this brand, Flauchersteg and Marienklausensteg are closed for safety reasons – the Tierparkbrücke normally remains open up to a level of 450 centimeters.
