Munich: Costs for tent roof renovation in the Olympic Park explode – Munich

Construction projects are constantly becoming more expensive, but these increases in a short period of time are very significant. The renovation of the tent roof in the Olympic Park should cost 85 million euros last year. Now it should be about 200 million euros. And documents from the supervisory board of Olympiapark GmbH show that the costs could rise even further, to up to 280 million euros. According to official information, the Olympiapark GmbH has no current cost estimate – the previously known 85 million euros are outdated, however, said a spokesman.

At the general meeting of the city council on Wednesday, no one questioned the need to renovate the world-famous and architecturally unique building. In view of the cost dimensions, however, city councilors from the coalition and the opposition exchanged blows.

“With every proposal we get, the costs continue to explode,” said SPD parliamentary group leader Anne Hübner. At the same time, the decisive figures are not presented to the city council at all, and the truth is only served “in slices”. Hübner criticized economics officer Clemens Baumgärtner (CSU), whose authority had to ensure “much more transparency”. When it comes to the renovation of the Gasteig, the city council is discussing the costs intensively; with the Olympic tent roof, on the other hand, the increases would simply be “passed on” and should then be accepted as is.

In view of the costs, a plan is also needed on how the Olympic Park can generate more income in the future. “It couldn’t have been six to eight concerts a year, more has to happen,” Hübner demanded. “There is an urgent need for a discussion about what should happen in the next few years and decades”. The Olympic Park is a wonderful place, “it must be preserved, but it must be more than a monument, and we must also be able to afford it”.

Alexander Reissl (CSU) called the demand for more events “cheap”, he missed “one or the other application example”. After all, a lot has already been tried out, from a wine fair to a controversial motorsport event that was “economically unfeasible”.

In addition, the city council commissioned Olympiapark GmbH to check whether and how photovoltaics can be used in the park – and whether it makes sense to equip the Plexiglas modules of the tent roof with solar foils. “If that works, it would be a very special example,” said Anna Hanusch (Greens). She also demanded a transparent list of the costs from the economics department: This had to create an overall timetable for the city council, with all the steps.
